Unai Emery remains safe at PSG despite Camp Nou meltdown
The Basque tactician will not be sacrificed after Champions League exit with PSG second in Ligue 1 and still in two domestic cup competitions.PSG vs Troyes live online
Unai Emery's position as Paris Saint-Germain manager is not under threat despite his side’s remarkable capitulation in Camp Nou on Wednesday night.
Emery a long-term bet
The Basque tactician remains in credit in the French capital where he is viewed as the architect to bring a long-term plan to fruition as he did at Sevilla, where his successes on the European stage originally caught the eye of PSG.
However, all is not roses in the city of love in Emery’s first season. Once again the side were unable to progress in the Champions League and the manner of their exit will take some time to soothe. In the previous four seasons PSG had reached the quarter-finals at least and although kinder last 16 draws played a part in the side’s progress, going out in the first knock-out round was not part of Nasser Al-Khelaifi’s road map for 2016-17.
PSG still in contention in Ligue 1 and two domestic cups
PSG have also lost some of their hegemony in Ligue 1, a competition they won by 31 points last season under Laurent Blanc. Emery’s side currently sit second in the league, three points adrift of leaders Monaco, and are still in two domestic cup competitions. On April 1 they will play Monaco in the Coupe de la Ligue final and are in the last eight of the Coupe de France, where they will play third-tier Avranches.
