Eric Cantona has defended Karim Benzema, as the Real Madrid striker continues to be overlooked for the French national side.

'France is a very strange country'

Speaking to Eurosport, the ex-Manchester United icon compared Benzema’s situation to that of French presidential candidate François Fillon: “France is a very strange country. If you’re accused of something, you’re out of the national team indefinitely, but you can remain as a candidate in the presidential elections”.

Cantona placed himself firmly against Fillon, accused of corruption by way of payments to his wife and children: “François Fillon suggested that we should cancel a match if the people didn’t respect the anthem. I suggest that we cancel the elections when the candidates do not respect morals or ethics.”

Benzema absence continues

Didier Deschamps has not called up Benzema to the France squad since October 2015. The player was accused of blackmailing his teammate Mathieu Valbuena.
