In the early hours of April 2nd, 1992 one of the greatest players in the history of Real Madrid lost his life in a road traffic accident while en route from the Bernabéu back to his home in Mérida. Juanito, “the genius of Fuengirola,” was 37 and his death was a huge blow to the Madrid faithful, a large majority of whom identified with the player’s attachment to the club. On Sunday, as Real Madrid host Alavés, the Bernabéu marked 25 years since that fateful night with a homage to the legendary number 7.

Juanito’s widow and children were invited to the VIP box at the stadium to witness the tribute while one of his sons, Roberto, received a scarf from the supporters’ club March 6, 1902 Association with the legend: Juanito, eternal on it. A banner with the same slogan was unfurled in the stadium.

Seventh minute homage to number 7

As always, the fans paid their own tribute in the seventh minute of the game with a passionate rendition of the traditional “ila, illa, illa, Juanito maravilla” chant and huge tifo of the number 7 shirt with the words “your deeds will not be forgotten.”

The number 7 shirt has special significance for Real Madrid fans and has been worn down the years by some of the club’s most legendary players: Raymond Kopa, Amancio, Emilio Butragueño, Raúl and Cristiano Ronaldo.
