Gareth Bale returned to Real Madrid training on Thursday in a bid to prove his fitness ahead of the Clásico this weekend after missing the side’s last two fixtures against Bayern Munich and Sporting due to a problem in his right ankle that he picked up in the opening leg of the Champions League tie against the Bundesliga giants, according to Zinedine Zidane.

The Real Madrid boss said in his pre-match press conference before the Bayern game on Tuesday that he could not be sure if Bale would be fit for the Clásico: “I can’t confirm if he’ll be there or not. We have to take it step by step.”

But Bale is determined to be ready for the game against Barcelona, even if it means going against the advice of Real’s medical staff. According to Spanish radio network SER, the club’s doctors have told Bale he has an edema and could risk further injury if he forces the issue to play in the Bernabéu on Sunday. The forward though insists it is just a bit of discomfort and that he is fit to play.

Bale returned to action recently after three months out after undergoing surgery on an ankle injury.

Zidane has proven himself unwilling since taking over at the Bernabéu to risk his players and he has a deep squad, Isco and Marco Asensio having provided solid back-up to the regular front three all season.

Bale's injury record

The Real boss will be even more cautious in the Welshman’s case due to his injury record since he joined Real Madrid in 2013. In total Bale has suffered 16 separate injuries that have caused him to miss at least one game during his Bernabéu career, including seven calf strains.
