The run-up to the Atlético Madrid - Real Madrid Champions League semi-final second leg was marred by violent incidents outside the Vicente Calderón stadium, with the police baton charging a group of Atleti fans.

Near the corner of the South Stand, the Fondo Sur, members of the security forces clashed and overpowered Atleti fans who were carrying flares and throwing bottles and stones. 

Real Madrid bus attacked

According to Spanish daily El País, the police formed a barrier to prevent the Atlético fans advancing. Again according to El País, the local supporters had attacked a Real Madrid supporters' bus with bottles and stones, causing at least one injury.

The injured Real fan spoke to Spanish radio station Cadena SER, explaining:  "I've been given three stitches and I was told that if I wasn't feeling dizzy I was OK to see the game but to go to hospital afterwards, because the knock I took was to the head.

"When we were arriving at where all the coaches were, they started to throw bottles, there were people spitting at the windows and we were a little bit afraid. There was a father with a boy and a girl, and when they started to throw bottles I protected them; they hit me, but they didn't hit the kids."
