Former Real Madrid midfielder Míchel will be in the spotlight this weekend when his alma mater visit La Rosaleda in search of the point that will take them to a first Liga title since 2011-12.

Since taking over on the south coast Míchel has led Málaga to a series of eye-catching victories at home, accounting for Barcelona, Valencia and Sevilla in recent weeks. The possibility of Míchel overseeing a bit of mischief on Sunday evening has not passed unnoticed in Catalonia but the Málaga manager has faced his old club on other occasions and has given no reason to doubt his professionalism.

Míchel puts one over on Mourinho

In the 2012-13 season when in charge of Sevilla Míchel oversaw a 1-0 victory in the Sánchez Pizjuán over a Real Madrid side managed by José Mourinho. When at the helm of Getafe the former Spain midfielder was on the losing side on four occasions over two seasons from 2009 to 2011 and was also in the dugout when Mourinho exacted revenge in the return fixture in 2012-13 with a 3-0 victory, after which Míchel was sacked.

Overall, Málaga have beaten Real Madrid on 10 occasions in 35 Liga meetings, although the balance in the 21st century is weighed heavily towards Sunday’s visitors: nine wins, five draws and a single defeat.
