Vitolo, currently of Sevilla, is a target for Diego Simeone's team, yet is worried that joining Atleti could harm his Russia World Cup chances with Spain.

Vitolo is one of Atlético Madrid’s prime transfer targets as Los Rojiblancos look to reinforce their squad for January. The Court of Arbitration for Sport’s decision to uphold Atlético’s transfer ban means that the club will not be able to register players this summer.

Vitolo has eyes on 2018 World Cup

This has complicated the signing of the Sevilla midfielder, who has a release clause of €40 million. Not least, because the player now needs convincing that a move to Diego Simeone’s team will be in the best interests of his career. Vitolo sees himself at a key moment. The World Cup is on the horizon, and he is currently in Jolen Lopetegui’s Spain squad. He wants to stay there.

As a result, Vitolo is not willing to miss the first half of the season. He is enthusiastic about the interest from Atlético, but would not consider the course of action that Arda Turan took when he joined Barcelona. The Camp Nou club were under a transfer ban at the time, and as such the Turkish international had to wait several months to make his debut.

Atlético will have to arrange enticing loan move

A deal for Sandro is far more straightforward, because the deal could stipulate that the player would remain at Málaga until January.

In the case of Vitolo, it is hard to conceive that Atlético would be willing to loan a Spanish international to a direct rival, Sevilla, for five months. Nor is it likely that Sevilla would be willing to not play Vitolo in the Champions League.

Vitolo stated at the start of June that Atlético are not the only team interested in acquiring his services.

Atlético intend to resolve the issue, one way or another, this week. On Monday, the leadership at the club are expected to present a proposal to Vitolo that would allow him to play at a high-level team until January, when he would join El Cholo’s ranks.
