Monchi says Roma won’t let Salah go ‘on the cheap’
Roma have advised potential buyers, including Liverpool, to raise their offers for prized Egyptian winger Mohamed Salah.
Roma have told prospective buying clubs to raise their price if they are to lure coveted Egyptian winger Mohamed Salah from the club. The Italians have also but put the brakes on German defender Antonio Rüdiger leaving.
Roma "not a supermarket" says Monchi
Salah, whose career stalled at Chelsea, has gone on to become one of Roma's most important players, and now is the subject of an approach by Liverpool. But the Italians' new Director of Sport Monchi said that the club won't let the pacy front man go easily.
“It's true there is interest in Salah from an English club, there is an offer, but we set the price and we decide if we sell at that price”, Monchi told the media this afternoon during the official unveiling of new coach Eusebio Di Francesco. “There have been no negotiations about Rüdiger, and there is no chance he will leave - zero”.
Pressed further on the club's transfer stance, Monchi affirmed: “Roma is not a supermarket. Our aim is to get better than last season. We need to keep together the best possible squad. There is no team in the world game that does not sell at least one player. As I said, the problem is not to sell; the problem is to buy badly: if one leaves he will have to be replaced properly”.
Roma finished runners-up for a ninth time last season since they won their last Scudetto in 2001.
