Wenger waxes lyrical on Mbappé: "He could be the new Pelé"
The Arsenal boss admitted that he would have liked to sign the France international but the fee Monaco were asking was "too high."
Arsène Wenger was invited to give an interview on Téléfoot, broadcast on French channel TF1, at the weekend and admitted that Arsenal would have liked to sign France international Kylian Mbappé from Monaco but the fee being asked of 180 million euros “was too high for us.”
Mbappé eventually moved to PSG on loan with a purchase option for the same amount at the end of the 2017-18 season in a deal that has alerted the interest of Uefa with regard to financial fair play after the Parisian side parted with 222 million euros to prise Neymar from Barcelona.
Wenger: "Mbappé is already a fantastic player"
However, Wenger limited himself to discussing Mbappé’s potential and did not hold back when selecting a player with whom to compare the 18-year-old: “I think he could be the new Pelé,” Wenger said. “There are no limits to his game. Why? Because he is 18 and he will gain more strength over the next two or three years. He really stands out in his ability to lose his marker. He is already a fantastic player.”
