Marcelo has renewed his contract at Real Madrid for a further two years and will remain at the club until 2022. The arrangement was officially announced on the club website on Wednesday with the Brazilian full back due to hold a press conference on Thursday at 14:00 CET.

If Marcelo sees out the full length of his new deal he will have spent 16 seasons at Real Madrid after joining from Fluminense at the age of 18 on November 9, 2006. He is currently the club’s second-longest serving foreign player with 414 appearances, behind only his compatriot Roberto Carlos, who played 527 times for Real Madrid.

When Marcelo arrived at the Bernabéu – for what he thought was merely a discussion but not a transferthe coaching staff were unsure whether to attach him to Castilla or the first team. He made his senior debut on January 7, 2007 in Riazor, alongside his idol Roberto Carlos. When the Brazil legend left the club six months later, Marcelo inherited his left back position after playing largely on the wing during his early Bernabéu career under Juande Ramos.

Although he endured criticism for his initial performances at the back due to his tendency to leave the flank unguarded as his attacking instincts took over he matured into one of the best left backs in the world and became a Bernabéu favourite.

Now 29 and the club vice-captain, Marcelo has won three Champions League titles, four Ligas, three European Super Cups, three Spanish Super Cups, two Copas del Rey and two Club World Cups during his career in the Spanish capital.
