Real Madrid and Spanish national team captain Sergio Ramos has given his opinion on a tweet by his compatriot, Gerard Piqué, who had commented on the heated debate regarding Catalonia potentially going ahead with a referendum on independence on Sunday 1 October. The Spanish government believe the election to be illegal.

Ramos suggests Piqué tweet unhelpful

"The tweet by Piqué is not the best if he doesn't want them [the fans] to whistle," said the Madrid man.

"As captain I think about the good atmosphere in the national team group; Piqué will know what he said. Maybe it wasn't the moment, nor will it help."

Piqué calls for peaceful expression

Earlier in the day Piqué had posted a message on his Twitter account:

"From today and until Sunday, let us express ourselves peacefully. Let's not give them any excuse. That is what they want. And let's sing loud and strong. #wewillvote."
