The game was played behind closed doors as a "protest", according to Barcelona president Josep María Bartomeu, with the message on the scoreboard being read as another means by which Barcelona protested the events of the day in Catalonia and the fact LaLiga authorities had refused to allow them to postpone the match.

Barcelona avoided six point penalty

Bartomeu said before the game that Barcelona had tried to have the match postponed, but no agreement could be reached with LaLiga to move the game to another day. Bartomeu said that given the situation Barcelona would have been hit with a six point punishment for not playing the match and that the "important thing" was to avoid that situation.
