Karim Benzema scored on his return to action for Real Madrid after injury in Getafe, hitting the first goal in a 2-1 victory for Zinedine Zidane’s side and his first of the Liga season. The Frenchman’s first-half strike, a fine solo effort, elevated him further up the table of historic goal scorers at the Bernabéu and the goal drew him level with one Real Madrid great and took him past another: Paco Gento and Pirri, respectively.
Benzema up to seventh in all-time Real scoring list
Benzema’s 182nd strike for the club, which he joined from Lyon in 2009, took him to seventh in the all-time list of top scorers for the club, level with Gento, who is currently the honorary president at the Bernabéu and who won six European Cups as a Madrid player. The next target for Benzema is Hugo Sánchez, who scored 207 times for the club.
It was also Benzema’s 123rd league goal, which moved him past another Real legend, Pirri, to ninth in the list of Liga scorers for the club. The next time Benzema hits the target he will move level with Emilio Butragueño, who currently serves as the clubs director of institutional relations.
