Angers 0-5 PSG: match report
PSG stretched their lead at the summit of Ligue 1 with a swaggering victory over mid-table Angers. Kylian Mbappé and Edinson Cavani both scored twice and Julian Draxler netted the other at the Stade Raymond Kopa.
A Neymar-less Paris Saint-Germain rushed in to an early lead when Mbappé helped Dani Alves’ cross in to the bottom corner after five minutes. Vincent Manceau squandered a decent chance for the home side before Draxler added a second within the first 15 minutes. The Germany international threaded on to Alves’ through-ball and navigated the ‘keeper with a dinked finish.
Cavani scored his 100th goal for the Parisien club after 30 minutes, but the goal was all about Mbappé’s incisive backheel in the build-up. The Uruguayan scored his second just after the hour mark to move one goal closer to Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s 113 goals for the club.
Mbappé wrapped up the victory in the last five minutes, rounding the ‘keeper and squeezing the ball past a flailing defender at the near post. At 18 years and 10 months, he becomes the youngest player to reach 20 Ligue 1 goals in the last 40 years.
Unai Emery’s well-oiled machine gobbled up another side, ground it down between its malevolent cogs, and spat it out at the other end.
Angers 0-5 PSG: as it happened
90'+1' Full time! Mbappé (2), Cavani (2), and Draxler score as PSG thrash Angers.
90' Presnel Kimpembe is booked.
86' Romain Thomas fluffs a clearance from Meunier's low cross, directing the ball straight in to Mbappé path. He is denied his hat-trick by the trailing leg of an Angers defender. The ball bobbles just wide of the post and out for a corner, which the home side clear.
85' GOL GOL GOL! Boos ring out as Kylian Mbappé latches on to Lucas Moura's through-ball, rounds the 'keeper, and tucks the ball through the diving defender's legs and in to the net.
81' A final change for Angers, with Lassana Coulibaly on for Flavien Tait.
80' Marco Verratti is booked.
79' Mbappé curls a shot from the edge of the 'D', which plops in to the goalkeeper's arms. The Angers fans continue to sing here, which endears them to me, because this match was done and dusted about an hour ago.
75' Ah, Mbappé was also booked for his part in that fluffery-buffery.
74' 74' Fulgini is booked for a little nibble at Mbappé's leg, after Mbappé had already fouled him. Nope, me neither.
73' No hat-trick for Cavani. He trots off and the lesser-spotted Lucas Moura takes his place. He has only played 55 minutes in Ligue 1 this season, and FYI, I'm now switching to David Attenborough's voice in my head to reflect his endangered status.
70' Layvin Kurzawa has a chance to add to his mid-week hat-trick against Anderlecht, but drags his shot well wide from Cavani's knock down.
68' Presnel Kimpembe almost gifts a goal to Angers, with a loose pass inside the box. Luckily for the young defender, Angers are utterly blunt, and fail to take advantage. The ball pops out to Flavien Tait, who catches the ball nicely with the outside of his right foot, but Areola is equal to it.
66' Angers swing in a free-kick from the right, which PSG head clear with ease.
64' Dani Alves hobbles off after picking up a series of knocks. Thomas Meunier comes on in his place. Lo Celso also enters the fray in the place of Julian Draxler. The Germany international scored the second goal, but has generally been quiet.
63' Angers are knocking the ball about a bit now. "It's still 0-0 lads".
61' GOOOL! Cavani latches on to a ball on the right flank as PSG come forward on the counter-attack. He thumps the ball in at the near post and, with a clenched jaw, growls in celebration towards the travelling support.
59' Fulginiiiii! Just wide! Vincent Manceau skips down the right wing and pulls the ball back to the No.23 on the edge of the box. His driven shot is well hit, but wide of the near post. A thud against the advertising hoarding accompanies the 'ooohh' of the crowd.
58' Enzo Crivelli turns the ball towards goal and it deflects behind. But the referee had already blown his whistle for a foul on Areola.
56' It looks like Fulgini has just given Mbappé a jab on the nose down by the corner flag. That was, erm, a bold move.
54' Fulgini plays an early ball through to Ekambi, but hits it with a little too much juice and it runs through to Areola.
50' Early double change for Angers. Sunu and Pavlovic go off, Fulgini and Crivelli come on. Very nice of the Angers boss to spare them of the 'hoiked off at half-time' humiliation.
49' Mbappé whips a ball in to Cavani on the penalty spot, who sees his header blocked by Romain Thomas. The PSG players appeal for hand-ball, and the referee emphatically waves it away.
48' Angers finally get a touch on the ball in this second half. PSG have emerged exuding calmness and control.
46' PSG get the second half going!
Gilles Sunu was booked four minutes before half-time for that challenge that left Dani Alves holding his head.
PSG have cruised, swaggered, reclined in to a comfortable lead at the break. Mbappé opened the scoring, Draxler added another, and Cavani tucked in the third to score his 100th goal for the club. "Easeh, easheh, easeh".
45'+1' The fourth official's board has flashed up to show two minutes of added time.
45'+1' 45'+1' Cavaniiiiiiiiii.... In to the wall!
45' 21 of the 22 players are standing around Mbappé, hands on hips. Only the Angers 'keeper is back in his own half. The referee has awarded a free-kick after conferring with his linesman, and Cavani stands over it, 25 yards out and central.
43' Now Mbappé is down holding his bonce after a coming together with Pavlovic. The ref goes over for a word with his assistant...
42' Dani Alves is down on the deck and wincing after taking a blow to the side of his head. He's now up on his feet and ambling over to the touchline. He'll be fine to continue.
37' Angers have their best spell of possession so far, working the ball across the pitch with zip and decisiveness. The culmination is a shot for Baptiste Santamaria from just outside the box. The culmination of that is a lot of groans from the home crowd, as the midfielder hooks it well wide. The differnence in quality between the teams is stark in the final third.
34' Mbappé surges in from the left wing with the ball at his feet. He tumbles under pressure from Manceau and tries to keep control of the ball with a break-dance style spin on the floor. Manceau nabs it off him though, and sets up a counter-attack that results in a corner for Angers. Ismael Traore meets it at the near post with a powerful header, but he can't keep it down.
30' GOOOOL! 3-0, already. Cavani gets this one. Saliou Ciss bombs forward for Angers before finding himself crowded out in the box. PSG ruthlessly exploit the space he has left behind him with a ball through to Mbappé. The 18-year-old glances over his shoulder, sees Cavani arriving, and sets up the Uruguayan with a tidy backheel. This is men against boys.
28' The camera pans to Lucas Moura on the PSG bench. The Brazilian looks profoundly bored. I wonder what he's think about? Indian or Chinese for dinner?
26' The ball drops invitingly for Saliou Ciss 30 yards out. The left-back stings his volley at goal, and Areola does well to take the power out of it and keep it in his grasp.
24' Ismael Traore gives the ball away cheaply to Kylian Mbappé, who leans back when aiming for the top-corner, gets it wrong, and fizzes the ball in to the stand.
23' Ekambi whips a dangerous ball in from the left, which Thiago Silva turns behind for a first corner of the match for Angers. Mateo Pavlovic meets it at the far post, but does so by climbing up on Kurzawa's shoulders. Free-kick to PSG.
18' Gilles Sunu drifts out to the left to receive the ball, does so, and then cuts back inside. The burly No.10 shoots to the near post but drags it wide. The 26-year-old came through at Arsenal and was at the north-London club until 2011.
16' That incisive PSG attack will make Angers rue missing that guilt-edged chance even more. The possession statistics flash up on the screen, showing that PSG have enjoyed 25 percent of the ball.
14' GOL GOL GOL! Verratti out wide to Alves, Alves through-ball to Draxler, Draxler dinks it over the 'keeper. Alves weighted the ball beautifully and Draxler timed his run to perfection. A fine goal and PSG are cruising.
12' Rabiot makes a positive run forward from the midfield, but doesn't send his shot far enough away from the goalkeeper. Mathieu Michel dives to the ground and grasps the ball to his chest.
11' Huge chance for Angers as Ekambi thunders his way down the left wing and hangs the ball up to the far side of the box. PSG's defence have all been sucked in towards the goal, playground style, leaving Vincent Manceau free to meet the ball on the volley. It's not a chance you want your right-back to be on the end of, and he shanks it well over the bar.
8' PSG look absolutely in control here (touch wood, for the sake of my live-stream integrity). The yellow-shirted Parisiens are passing the ball around in the attacking third. Whenever Angers hoof the ball clear, there's nobody to meet it and PSG ease forward again.
5' GOOOOOL! Kylian Mbappé slips PSG in to an early lead, but it was all about Dani Alves' delivery. The Brazilian plonked the ball on Mbappé right foot, who helped it along subtly in to the bottom corner.
4' Mbappé tries to flick the ball over Romain Thomas' head and surge in to the space behind him. The Angers centre-half shoves Mbappé with a strong shoulder just outside the box, and gets away without committing a foul.
2' The Angers full-backs have already demonstrated their intent to attack. When PSG played away at Anderlecht in the Champions League, the home side's 'three-man defence and wing-backs' system caused a few problems. Well, PSG won 0-4, so not that many problems. But if any system is to fell the Ligue 1 leaders, I think it is this one.
1' Peeeep! Angers get proceedings underway!
The home side are setting up with a five-man defence, with the aim of stifling PSG's fluid attack. Hopefully it doesn't make of a particularly stodgy match...
The teams are gathering in he rather cosy Angers tunnel. That 'clack-clack' of studs on tiled floor us just glorious. It looks like a full house in the Stade Raymond Kopa, with the home fans lifting a tifo behind the goal.
These two teams last met in the final of the Coupe de France, which PSG won 1-0 back in May at the Stade de France.
Karl Toko Ekambi is their main danger man. The Paris-born Cameroon international has scored five goals in Ligue 1 starts so far this campaign.
Angers have fluttered betwen the third and first tiers of French football in the last 20 years, but Les Scoïstes have now been in Ligue 1 since 2015.
Angers, which is located in the north-west of France and has just under 150,000 inhabitants, is twinned with Seville, in case you were wondering. And Wigan. Let's not forget about Wigan. Wikipedia tells me that Angers is known for its 'rich cultural life', but I doubt the pies are as good as in its affiliated Lancashire metropolis.
No sign of Neymar this afternoon in PSG's front-three, he's injured along with Thiago Motta. Javier Pastore will come in alongside Edinson Cavani and Kylian Mbappé in attack. It's a slight surprise that Mbappé is in the starting line-up once again. The 18-year-old has been a mainstay for PSG this season, and some might argue he's in need of a rest.
Here's how and where you can catch this afternoon's game at the Stade Jean-Bouin.
Quick stat attack: did you know that PSG have won 19 of their last 23 games in Ligue 1? And that they have scored at more than one goal in 12 of their last 14 away league matches? Well, you do now!
Hello and welcome to our build up to the game between Angers and Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1. There is no doubting that the visitors to the Stade Raymond Kopa this afternoon are massive favourites having already amassed more than double the points of their hosts in just 11 games.
