Oscar Pistorius film 'Blade Runner Killer' to air this weekend

The film, described by the brother of Oscar Pistorius as "a gross distortion", will be broadcast on television in South Africa this weekend.

Blade Runner Killer, a movie about Oscar Pistorius and Reeva Steenkamp will air in South Africa this weekend. The movie dramatizes the events of Valentine’s Day 2013, when Pistorius murdered his girlfriend Steenkamp, as well as the trial of the former Olympian. Produced by Eric Tomosunas and Swirl Films for Think-factory Media, the filam will be broadcast by the Lifetime Channel on 18 November at 8pm.

Pistorius and Steenkamp families not happy

Last month, the family of the former sprinter said the film is a gross misrepresentation of the happenings, and that they would take legal action against the producers of the movie.

“The film is a gross misrepresentation of the truth. The film is rather a representation of what the prosecution tried to portray. We will be taking legal action,” Oscar’s brother Carl Pistorius said in a statement.

The family of Steenkamp also released a statement disapproving the film. “They are horrified and upset to read a report that ‘the movie is told from Steenkamp and her mother’s perspective”, read a statement from the family. “Any impression that the movie is endorsed by the Steenkamp family is untrue and incorrect.”

Reeva’s sister Simone dismissed the movie as “a money-making exercise and very washy-washy”, adding, “My mother was mortified when she first found about it. When I told her about it, she said, ‘you have upset me now’. She was not happy. I watched a snippet today and the people don’t even talk proper South African. They sound ei¬ther British or American, but they certainly don’t sound like South Africans.”

Pistorius case continues

Oscar Pistorius was convicted for murdering his girlfriend Steenkamp by shooting her multiple times through a toilet cubicle door in the early hours of Valentine’s Day in 2013. The former Olympic athlete claims he mistook his girlfriend for an intruder. Earlier this month, South Africa’s prosecutors appealed for a longer sentence for Pistorius, as they consider six-years of imprisonment “shockingly light”.
