Jean-Michel Aulas has explained why Real Madrid do not have a buy-back option for the Hispano-Dominican striker, who has made a flying start to life in Ligue 1.

Lyon President Jean-Michel Aulas has re-affirmed the claim he made one week ago that Real Madrid do not have a buy-back option for Mariano. And, this time, he has explained why.

Lyon and Mariano in agreement

“No, there is no clause,” Aulas told Breaking Foot on SFR Sport, “it was brought up at the time but in the end it wasn’t put in writing. Partly because we didn’t want one, and secondly, because Mariano didn’t want one either. So Mariano belongs 100 percent to Lyon.”

In any case, Real Madrid and Lyon would not have been able to include a buy-back clause, because such clauses are not considered effective under French law.

Real Madrid return not imminent

Aulas’ most recent statement comes seven days after he took to Twitter to vociferously deny rumours that the Hispano-Dominican forward will return to Madrid next summer.

Several weeks earlier, the club released a statement explaining that the only clause in Mariano’s contract is a clause that entitles Real Madrid to 35 percent of his next transfer.

Lyon sit in third place in Ligue 1, behind PSG and Monaco. Mariano has adapted well to life across the Pyrenees, scoring nine goals in 12 games.
