Betis have received a blow regarding Tonny Sanabria’s knee injury as it has emerged that the Paraguay international may be forced to sit out the rest of the season. The club’s top scorer this season underwent an arthroscopy but during the procedure it was decided not to remove the damaged meniscus, according to Canal Sur Radio, who said the decision was made to prevent further problems later in the player’s career.

Sanabria and medical staff at the Barcelona hospital where he was treated considered various options but elected not to remove the meniscus, which will mean a longer period of recovery of between four and five months.

Castro return tonic for Setién

The loss of Sanabria, who scored the winning goal against Real Madrid in the Bernabéu and had been in the best form of his career, is a significant setback for Betis boss Quique Setién. The Verdiblancos have been struggling in recent weeks, eliminated from the Copa by Cádiz and slipping down the Liga table after a run of one win in eight games and Setién will be eager to secure the return of Rubén Castro from Guizhou Zhicheng, where the striker is on a five-month loan deal.
