Leonardo has stepped down as coach of Turkish Süper Lig club Antalyaspor after just over two months in the job, the club announced in a statement today. “Our coach Leonardo has left the club by mutual consent. We thank him for his contribution and wish him sporting success in the future”, Antalyaspor’s statement read.

Antalyaspor dicing with danger in the Süper Lig

The arrival in late September of the high-profile Leonardo, who has previously been manager of AC Milan and Inter Milan as well as director of football at Paris Saint-Germain, had been greeted with excitement by the club. But his rapid departure - even by Turkish football standards, comes just as the team is enduring a disastrous season.

The club from the southern Mediterranean resort city are one of Turkey's most ambitious sides, despite only winning promotion to the Süper Lig in 2015. But a star-studded squad including captain Samuel Eto'o and former Manchester City and France star Samir Nasri has failed to make any impact so far. Antalyaspor are currently languishing just above the relegation zone with 13 points from 14 matches and Monday's 3-0 defeat away to Trabzonspor appears to have proved the final straw.
