Sevilla hitting lowest number of goals in six seasons
The decision to leave Wissam Ben Yedder on the bench in the Bernabéu was a curious one as the Frenchman is the side's main source of strikes.
Sevilla’s 5-0 defeat at the hands of Real Madrid in the Bernabéu laid bare one of the issues Eduardo Berizzo’s side are facing this season. Defensive vulnerability aside, Sevilla have lost their attacking prowess as well in the first half of 2017-18 and are currently on their driest spell in front of goal since 2011-12, when they scored 16 times in the opening 15 games of the season under Marcelino García Toral.
So far in this campaign Sevilla have found the net only 19 times, a source of concern for Berizzo and his assistant Ernesto Marcucci, who is in temporary charge of the team while the manager recovers from prostate cancer surgery. With Jorge Sampaoli at the helm last season, Sevilla had scored 28 times. The club’s search for a goal-scoring number nine, after Stevan Jovetic’s loan came to an end, produced Luis Muriel but the 20-million-euro acquisition from Sampdoria has not yet found his feet in LaLiga, scoring just three times in 11 games.

Wissam Ben Yedder is the side’s top scorer with 13 in all competitions, which made the decision to leave the Frenchman on the bench throughout the mauling in the Bernabéu all the more curious.
Both Berizzo and Marcucci have attempted to lend expression to their attacking players with their tactics and formations but Sevilla’s attack has been stuttering. The summer additions of Nolito, Jesús Navas and Joaquín Correa were designed to provide goals from positions other than the centre forwards but none of the new arrivals have yet had much of an impact in the goals-for column with six strikes between them in all competitions.
