Qatar lose to Liechtenstein in Gulf Cup of Nations warm-up
A last-gasp Michele Polverino penalty gave Liechtenstein their first away victory in three years in Thursday's friendly clash in Doha.
Qatar suffered another setback in their preparations to host the 2022 World Cup on Thursday, going down to a painful 2-1 friendly defeat to European minnows Liechtenstein. Michele Polverino's last-minute penalty in Doha was enough to give Liechtenstein a first away win in three years, as Qatar's disappointing recent displays continued.
Qatari preparing to defend Gulf Cup of Nations crown
The result is a further blow to the Qataris and their Spanish coach, Félix Sánchez, who became the side's third boss in less than a year when he was appointed in June. Qatar are getting ready for the 2017 Gulf Cup of Nations in Kuwait, a tournament that they go to as defending champions. Sánchez has named a strong squad for the event - which gets underway on 22 December - with three Europe-based players included, such as star man Akram Afif.
