Jose Mourinho will not be serving up the Christmas turkey for the Manchester United players this year. That tradition, observed through the Van Gaal and Ferguson eras, has been halted by club chef Mike Donnelly on the grounds that too much food is wasted.

Less waste: a change of tradition

The festive lunch is due to take place on Friday at the Carrington training facilities and according to the UK tabloid The Sun, the Portuguese manager and his technical team will be sitting down alongside their playing staff as the food is put onto plates. Quoting an 'insider at the club':

“The United Christmas lunch used to be one of the highlights of the year, with the players enjoying being served by the people who usually bark the orders at them. But this year the head chef has took matters into his own hands and told the manager and his team that they won’t be serving the food.

“The problem is when the management do it, they pile the plates high and loads of food ends up wasted in the bin. When you’re cooking for 200-odd people, that’s a lot of time, effort and money going straight into the bin.”

Despite a history of removing or sidelining players and staff that have stood up to the former Porto, Real Madrid, Chelsea and Inter Milan coach, there has been no information provided whatsoever that Mr Donnelly's position could be in jeopardy.
