Fernando Torres provides a reason for Atlético to be cheerful
The 33-year-old striker opened his LaLiga account for the season with the winning goal against Alavés at the Wanda Metrpolitano.
Fernando Torres made his entry after 68 minutes against Alavés, and found the net with his first touch inside the opposition penalty area. The No.9 registered his first goal of the season in LaLiga, and declared himself happy that “thousands and thousands of Atleti fans are going home feeling content.”
Torres has no intention of throwing in the towel
The Wanda Metropolitano celebrated wildly as ‘one of their own’ broke the deadlock against a well-organised Alavés team enjoying a peak in form under new manager Abelardo. Torres visited Diario AS recently, and reaffirmed that he has no intention of ‘throwing in the towel’. He made that clear against Alavés, and showed that he can provide a reason to be cheerful for Atlético fans.
El Niño has taken a while to get going in the league, although it should be noted that he has not played more than 30 minutes in a match since the opening day defeat to Girona, a match that he started.
French striker Kevin Gameiro moved ahead of Torres in the fight to partner Antoine Griezmann in attack, particularly following a strong performance against Levante. Yet despite the imminent availability of Diego Costa, Torres is not giving up on winning back a place in the team.
Unperturbed despite Costa arrival
Despite a lack of joy in front of goal this season, the former Liverpool and Chelsea striker has knack of scoring at the right time. His goal against Alavés was decisive, as were the two he scored against Athletic Club in the final match at the Calderón. 14 of the 31 goals he has scored in his second spell at the club have opened the scoring.
Diego Simeone will have to decide whether to hand a starting berth to Torres or Gameiro for the final match of 2017, away at Espanyol on Friday evening. The academy product sent a clear message to Simeone against Alavés: he still has plenty to contribute this season.
