Bruno Genesio has declared war on festive feasting: "The players have to follow the specific plan or they will be fined. Injuries occur in that way."

Christmas may be coming but Lyon players have been warned not to emulate the proverbial goose as they head home for the winter break. The club’s manager, Bruno Genesio, has confirmed that any of his squad returning to the training ground after the festive period carrying a few extra kilos will face economic sanctions, and presumably an extra shift or two on the practice pitches.

"The players have 10 days of holidays. That’s a lot of days but it is necessary. They need to have a rest, physically and mentally. But they also have to respect the rules we’ve given them in a specific plan. They need to come back to Lyon fit and at the right weight. If they put on 600 grams or a kilo that is acceptable. If they exceed one kilo there will be fines,” Genesio confirmed in a press conference.

Far from being a snack-based Scrooge, the Lyon coach explained the issue: “It is important that they follow the rules because if they don’t injuries will occur and then we waste time.”
