The Uefa tweet about Diego Costa that was quickly deleted

Diego Costa is hoping to finally make his debut for Atlético Madrid following his move from Chelsea in the summer transfer window. The delay to him playing was due to the sanctions placed upon the Spanish side by Uefa, and it was European football's governing body that seemed to forget the situation of the Liga side in their own competition.

Costa unable to affect Atlético early season

The arrival of the Brazilian-born striker has many Atleti fans hopeful of a real push to catch Barcelona at the summit of their domestic competiiton and Costa himself will be looking to hit the ground running in 2018 in an attempt to be first choice for the Spanish national side when the teams pitch up in Russia in the summer. The striker has not kicked a ball in anger since the move went through and has instead been working in training, unable to help his new teammates in their quest for a good push on all fronts in the first half of the season.

Champions League exit surprise

As the new year ticked over, the sanctions lifted, and Uefa looked at the prospect of what success Costa could bring to Atlético. Their official Twitter account for the Champions League asked the simple question to its followers of how many goals the new Atlético striker would score.

Whether reminded by a fan, or another employee, the tweet was quickly removed upon realisation that Diego Simeone's troops had been surprisingly eliminated from the competition in the group stage with Chelsea and Roma progressing. Shortly after, the same question was posed from the Europa League account. An easy mistake to make given the Rojiblancos' recent run of impressive Champions League campaigns.
