Sweden's Kalla takes Games' first gold, Bjoergen makes history
Pyeongchang 2018 hailed its first gold medallist on Saturday, with Charlotte Kalla triumphing in the skiathlon.
Sweden's Charlotte Kalla won the first gold medal of the 2018 Winter Olympics in the women's skiathlon, which saw Marit Bjoergen make history. Kalla prevailed by 7.8 seconds in the 15-kilometre race in Pyeongchang on Saturday, marking the third time she has topped the podium at an Olympics.
History made in Pyeongchang
Bjoergen had been seeking to defend her title – having edged out Kalla in Sochi four years ago – but the 37-year-old Norwegian still had the sizeable consolation prize of becoming the most decorated female Winter Olympian in history. Her silver means her medal collection now stands at 11, while Finland's Krista Parmakoski took bronze.
