The European Indoor Masters Championships are underway in Madrid, a competition where veteran athletes compete in a series of age ranges from 35 up to the over-100s – a category where Giuseppe "SuperPeppe" Ottaviani reigns supreme.

The 101-year-old Italian athlete competes in long jump, triple jump and the shot put after deciding to take to track and field at the age of 75 after 50 years working as a tailor.

Born during the First World War, SuperPeppe was a pilot during WWII and has lived to witness most of the major events of the 20th century.

However, the indefatigable Sant'Ippolito-born athlete is still setting records after reaching a century of his own in 2016. His son and coach, Paolo, 55, accompanies him at every event.

In Madrid, SuperPeppe claimed two golds, in long-jump and shot put, albeit ones that will be accompanied by an asterisk: he is the only athlete on the Masters circuit over the age of 100 so competes unopposed.

A leap of 85 centimetres was sufficient to claim victory in the long jump and he managed 3.31 metres in the shot put.

SuperPeppe was also due to compete in the 60m, an event he holds the world record for, but declined saying he was a little worn-out after his exertions in the other events.
