Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp saw his side safely through to the semi-finals of the Champions League on Tuesday with a 2-1 away win at Manchester City that wrapped up a 5-1 aggregate victory over Pep Guardiola’s Premier League champions elect.

The German tactician, though, expressed his surprise when told after the game that he may well face Roma rather than Barcelona in the last four after the Serie A side pulled off one of the great shocks in the history of the competition by overturning a 4-1 deficit against Barcelona in the Stadio Olimpico.

Klopp: "They lost Salah and are in the semi-finals, a fantastic result"

When I was in the tunnel on the way to the dressing room after the game I was told about what happened in Rome and to be honest I thought it was a joke. I don’t want to sound disrespectful to Roma, they are a fantastic side, but I didn’t expect that result. They lost Mo Salah in the summer and they are in the semi-finals, it’s an incredible result,” the Liverpool manager said.

The draw for the last four will take place in Nyon on Friday at 13:00 CET with Liverpool and Roma in the hat. They will be joined by two of Real Madrid, Juventus, Sevilla or Bayern Munich after Wednesday’s second round of quarter-final second leg fixtures.
