Buffon: "The referee has a rubbish bin where his heart should be"

Gigi Buffon's night and potentially his run in the Champions League ended on Wednesday night with a red card after Michael Oliver sent him off for dissent after awarding Real Madrid a late penalty. He said that Oliver "has a rubbish bin where his heart should be" and went on to disparage the referee further.

The goalkeeper said Oliver's decision "was one of an animal, of a beast, not of a human being."

He went on to say that "If a referee doesn't have the courage and personality to manage a game on the pitch, then he should sit in the stands alongside his wife and have some chips."

"In the last seconds of stoppage time, the referee can't award a penalty that is extremely doubtful. He can't just destroy everything like that," Buffon continued.

"Someone has to pay, as everyone pays," Buffon told reporters after the game. "The referee did what he had to do: the problem is just that. He had no sensibility, no serenity. It means you don't know where you are, what teams you face, what football is: you don't really know shit."

"If you have the cynicism to award a penalty like that in the 93rd minute, you are not a man, you are an animal," the 40-year-old finished.
