Liverpool fans attacked in Kiev ahead of final against Madrid
Reports coming out of the UK state that there was a vicious and unprovoked attack on fans of the English club as they ate at a restaurant on Thursday evening.
Less than 48 hours before the final of the 2018 Champions League between Real Madrid and Liverpool, there have been some serious incidents in Kiev with Reds fans under attack.
Liverpool fans attacked
According to the UK national newspaper, The Daily Mirror, Thursday evening saw around twenty hooligans launching a wild attack on Liverpool fans in the vacinity of the stadium where the game will be played in the Ukrainian capital.
The group burst into a quiet restaurant called Rooster at about 20:30 local time, and left Liverpool fans bloodied and with head injuries. According to the newspaper, the fans tried to protect themselves as best they could using tables and chairs. The assailants heads were covered with hoods and they wore masks adorned with skulls. Although some outlets have suggested those involved were Russian hooligans, some of the markings on their clothing - including the CSKA Kyiv club badge - suggested they were locals.
Increased security
The local police arrived after receiving several calls, and had made some arrests by the end of the night, while medical services treated the wounded in the restaurant. The attack has resulted in security measures being enhanced in the city to prevent further attacks in the coming hours.
One of the victims told the Mirror that the thugs "came towards us like a pack of dogs" and stated quite understandably that "I did not come here for this, I came to watch the football."
