Real Madrid: three consecutive Champions Leagues and four in five seasons
No team had won the trophy three times in a row since the change in format in 1993. It's the first time any club has won the European Cup in football and basketball in the same year.
Real Madrid made history tonight in the Champions League final. 357 days since they won their 12th European Cup in Cardiff, Zidane's side have conquered the club's 13th European title, confirming their status as epoch dominators, with three consecutive Champions League triumphs: 2016 in Milan, 2017 in Cardiff and 2018 in Kiev, something no side has managed since the change in format in 1993. Madrid have also won four of the past five years. When the tournament was still the European Cup, Di Stéfano's Madrid won five in a row (1955-60), and Ajax won three in a row (1971-73) as did Bayern Munich (1974-76). There is no doubt that Zidane's Real Madrid have entered the history books of the club as it maintains its dominance over European football.
Madrid: Kings of Europe
The European Cup is without a shadow of a doubt Real Madrid's competition par excellence. They play with the confidence of a side who play as if they were always at home. They've won 13 of the 16 finals they've played in the competition (81% win rate!), winning the last six they've played in. In fact the last time they lost a final was 1981, against none other than Liverpool.
The triumph in Kiev is the latest instalment of European success from the club with most European Cup wins, stretching right back to the start of the competition, with Real Madrid winning the first five editions. They dominated from 1955 to 1960, culminating with the famous 7-3 win over Eintracht Frankfurt in Glasgow, with four goals from Puskas and three from Di Stéfano. The Madrid Yé-Yé side increased the legend with their 1966 win over Partizan, before the 32 year drought until Mijatovic finally brought the famous cup back to Madrid in 1998, with his goal against Juventus that saw the Spanish side win their seventh European Cup.
Six wins out of six
Moving from the 20th century to the 21st, Real Madrid's hunger for European success continued unabated, with six wins in six finals: against Valencia in 2000 in Paris, the 1-2 win over Bayer Leverkusen in 2002 in Glasgow, with that volley from Zidane, the 4-1 triumph over Atlético to lift the Décimo, the tenth European Cup in Lisbon, the win on penalties, again against Atlético, in Milan in 2016 and the 1-4 thrashing of Juventus in Cardiff last year, and tonight in Kiev against Liverpool.
Thirteen European Cups which put the Spanish giants far ahead of the other big sides in Europe. In fact more than Milan (seven) and Barcelona (five) together.
