Cristiano Ronaldo learned of Zidane's departure from Real Madrid in Marbella where he is spending a few days recovering from a hectic season. The exit does not suit Ronaldo as Zidane was one of the great defenders he had at the club with regards to getting a new deal. The French manager spoke publicly about it saying "Cristiano has to stay at Real Madrid," after los Blancos had won their 13th Champions League and the Portuguese had hinted at a departure himself. He has also asked Perez for a new contract for Ronaldo on numerous occasions behind closed doors. Zidane sees Ronaldo's presence as vital to winning titles next season.

After the departure of the leader, the continuity of Ronaldo becomes even more important in helping Sergio Ramos in the dressing room. Between the manager and the striker, there was a fondness that is unusual between player and coach. Zidane would often ask for advice from Ronaldo and the Portuguese was never slow to dispense with his thoughts. Without Zidane as the manager, it seems Ronaldo's place in the squad is even more precarious.

In the next few hours, Zidane is set to contact Ronaldo to explain his decision and will take the chance to tell Ronaldo not to leave Real Madrid. Zidane was first to leave, Ronaldo could be next. We will find out what happens with the rest of the BBC as the summer unfolds.
