However, in a stunning move today, Wednesday, the head of the Spanish FA sacked Lopetegui for the way he'd handled his signing at Real Madrid, meaning the coach is heading back to Spain this evening and expected to land in the Spanish capital around 2am on Thursday.
Real Madrid are keen to seize the opportunity and present Lopetegui on Thursday evening as their new coach. He will be signing a three-year deal at the Bernabéu. The details of his presentation are still to be worked out, but some sources say it could take place around 18:30 CEST on Thursday, during the opening match of the World Cup between Russia and Saudi Arabia.
