Luis Enrique Martinez has been officially appointed the new coach of the Spanish national team. His appointment was announced this afternoon at a press conference by president of the Spanish Football Federation, Luis Rubiales.

The board of the Spanish Football Federation unanimously approved his contract until the end of Euro 2020, and the new coach will come with his own backroom staff. Luis Enrique will take charge of his first game on 31 August against England at Wembley, followed by the clash with Croatia on 11 September – Spain’s first two games in the debut edition of the UEFA Nations' League.

Luis Enrique favoured ahead of Sanchez Flores and Michel

The former Barcelona manager, who was favoured ahead of the other candidates Quique Sánchez Flores y Michel, will be officially presented as new head coach of the national setup in the coming days.

Luis Enrique will replace Fernando Hierro, who had taken over as interim coach following the sacking of Julen Lopetegui two days before Spain’s opening World Cup game against Portgual, after he had unexpectedly given his notice of resignation to Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales to take over as the new manager of Real Madrid for the 2018-19 season.
