Serie A has postponed AC Milan's meeting with Genoa and Sampdoria's hosting of Fiorentina in the wake of the Morandi bridge collapse.

At least 38 people were killed when one of the bridge's supporting towers collapsed in torrential rain on Tuesday.

Genoa and Fiorentina, who are both based in the city, asked to have their Sunday fixtures postponed following the tragedy.

Their opponents and Lega Seria A agreed to the requests and the matches will now be rescheduled.

In a statement, Serie A confirmed new dates for the fixtures would be announced in the coming days.

It read: "The President of the Lega Serie A, given the requests for postponement of their matches scheduled for Sunday, August 19 at 20.30 on the part of the clubs Sampdoria and Genoa as result of the tragedy which hit Genoa, and having received the assent of both Fiorentina and Milan, has decided on the postponement of the Sampdoria-Fiorentina and Milan-Genoa matches.

"The rescheduled dates for the two matches will be announced in the coming days, in compliance with the regulations in force."

One minute's silence will be observed prior to each of the other eight opening-weekend games with players to wear black armbands.
