Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez has publicly come out against the plans of LaLiga boss Javier Tebas to play league games in the United States.

“We will not go to the United States. I don’t know in whose interest it is, but is not in the interests of the clubs and the fans. We will categorically refuse,” said Perez at a club assembly meeting today, allaying the fears of club members in attendance.

Despite opposition from Spanish FA, Fifa and the Association of Spanish Footballers (AFE), Tebas has insisted that this season’s Girona-Barcelona game will go ahead in the US. Now Real Madrid are the latest to come out against Tebas’ unpopular plan.

At a preparatory meeting ahead of today’s assembly on Friday, Perez had privately expressed his objection to the Girona-Barcelona game being held in Miami, as well as the possibility of Madrid playing a fixture stateside, saying he was “completely against” the idea.
