What’s wrong with Armando “Hormiga” González? From top scorer to goal drought

Chivas are enduring a difficult start to the Apertura 2026 tournament, a situation that has raised concerns throughout the club. The lack of positive results is beginning to show not only in the team’s overall performances but also in the individual form of some of its key players.
One of the most notable cases is that of Armando “Hormiga” González, the 24-year-old striker who previously finished as Liga MX’s top scorer. Right now, however, the forward is going through a worrying goal drought.
González’s goalscoring struggles
Since April 5, when he scored a brace against Pumas on matchday 13 of the Clausura 2026, González has been unable to find the back of the net in Liga MX play. It’s also worth noting that he did not feature during the playoffs in the previous tournament.
Between April 5 and July 31, 117 days have passed, meaning González has gone nearly four months without a league goal. While part of that stretch came during a period of domestic inactivity, the drought remains significant for a player expected to lead the attack and serve as one of the team’s offensive pillars.
Against Puebla on Friday, the score remained tied at 1-1, a result that did not fully reflect what had unfolded on the field, where El Rebaño Sagrado had shown far greater attacking intent throughout the match.
According to Sofascore, Guadalajara’s dominance was evident. Chivas controlled 65% of possession and generated an impressive 24 shots, including eight on target, compared to just seven total attempts from Puebla.
The visitors also held the edge in expected goals (1.86 to 0.59) and showcased their superiority in possession and build-up play with 577 accurate passes, highlighting their command of both the ball and the tempo of the match.
González keeps knocking, but can’t break through
On an individual level, González remained heavily involved, posting 0.89 expected goals, creating one key pass, and recording four shots. He was one of Chivas’ most active attacking threats throughout the night.
However, a lack of finishing touch, combined with Puebla’s defensive resilience, left the striker empty-handed once again and kept the match level.
