Growing into the season

After being substituted in Madrid's heavy defeat to neighbours Atlético Madrid in the Uefa Super Cup, Asensio started to make his mark in the first game of the season against Getafe, teeing up Gareth Bale for Los Blancos' second in a 2-0 win. Against Girona in Matchday 2 the man from Mallorca won two penalties, converted by Sergio Ramos and Karim Benzema, and gainst Leganés in the next game it was Asensio's cross that set up Benzema to make it 2-1, before he won another penalty, converted by Ramos once more, to make the scoreline a more comfortable 4-1.

A narrow win

Against Espanyol on Saturday night Asensio was decisive again in a hard-fought 1-0 winstroking the ball into the far corner after being set up by Modric only for the goal to be disallowed for offside and then given after going to VAR. The performances by Madrid's number 20 are starting to reflect fulfilled potential, and if he carries on in this vein he will be a nailed-on starter in the months ahead.
