Piqué: CF Reus ask Barça star to rescue their club

After the defender said this week he was thinking of buying a football team, the Catalan club have asked him to step in as they face administrative relegation.

Piqué: CF Reus ask Barça star to rescue their club

Segunda División outfit FC Reus Deportiu have sent an SOS to Gerard Piqué after the Barcelona defender said during an interview with L’Equipe that he was pondering the idea of buying a football club.

According to Barcelona-based media outlet Metrópoli Abierta, Reus have reached out to Piqué and asked that he and his Kosmos investment group step in to avoid the club facing administrative relegation and, in the worst-case scenario, liquidation due to mounting financial problems.

Reus’ idea is for Piqué to purchase the club and then recapitalize it to stave off the receivers. Reus players have not been paid their full salaries for months and the club is mired in debt as well as sitting 20th in the division.

However, relegation could come far sooner than May via the courts if Reus, who are owned by Joan Oliver, a former FC Barcelona director during the Joan Laporta presidency, do not produce five million euros before December 5 to satisfy their creditors, with the threat of administrative descent to Segunda B looming if that demand is not met.
