Griezmann: Futre says "club colour could be the problem"
The Atlético legend, who was second in the Ballon d'Or voting in 1987, told the France striker: "Even winning the Champions League isn't always historic."
Former Atlético striker Paulo Futre sent Antoine Griezmann a message of support after the France international came third in the Ballon d’Or voting in Paris on Monday evening.
Futre, who was second in the Ballon dÓr voting in 1987 behind AC Milan’s Ruud Gullit, suggested that the 2018 decision had been influenced by the identity of the club the top two of Luka Modric and Cristiano Ronaldo represented in the 2017-18 season.
“Don’t worry Antoine Griezmann: sometimes even winning the Champions League isn’t a historic achievement. It could be that the problem is the colour of your team. Forza Atleti and a big hug, champ.”
Futre signed for Atlético in 1987 after winning the Champions League with Porto, being named man of the match as the Portuguese side beat Bayern Munich 2-1 in Vienna. But it was Gullit, who led PSV to the Eredivisie title and earned a move to Milan that same summer, who won the top prize.
