Manchester City's crucial 2-1 win over title rivals Liverpool sparked jubilation at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday, as goals by Sergio Agüero and Leroy Sané ensured that Pep Guardiola's men moved to within four points of the Premier League leaders.

Stewards give chase as City's Mendy races onto pitch

And after the final whistle in Manchester, injured City left-back Benjamin Mendy was quick to join in the celebrations, with his recent fitness issues not stopping him from racing onto the pitch to savour the triumph with his team-mates.

But Mendy was dressed in 'civilian' clothes and was not immediately recognised by the stewards inside the stadium, who promptly gave chase behind the 24-year-old as he made his way onto the field to congratulate his City colleagues.

Security staff realise error just in time

Thankfully for Mendy, the security staff realised who he was before they could put in the kind of robust challenge they normally reserve for pitch invaders, with the Frenchman later taking to Twitter to show he saw the funny side of the incident:
