PSG: Mbappé equals Ronaldo in 24 Champions League games

The France international scored his 14th goal in the competition on Wednesday night, matching the former Real Madrid and Brazil forward's mark in Europe.

Update:
El jugador francés del PSG, Kylian Mbappé y el exjugador brasileño, Ronaldo, con el Real Madrid.

Kylian Mbappé proved decisive again as Paris Saint-Germain beat Manchester United 2-0 at Old Trafford to put half a foot in the Champions League quarter-finals, the 20-year-old scoring the Ligue 1 side’s second goal in a sweeping team move.

That strike took the France international to 14 goals in the competition, level with Brazil great Ronaldo, who scored the same number during his career in Europe with Inter and Real Madrid.

But while Ronaldo reached that mark over the course of 40 games, Mbappé has done so in just 24, across two and a half seasons with Monaco and PSG.

Ronaldo was active across six Champions League campaigns with the Serie A side (one) and the Liga club (five) with his most prolific campaign in Europe coming in 2002-03, when he scored six in 11 games for Madrid on their run to the semi-finals.

Ronaldo’s Champions League participation came to an end when he moved from Milan to Corinthians in 2009. Mbappé could conceivably have another 10-15 seasons in the competition and at his current rate of scoring at a goal every 129 minutes he may be able to edge his total towards the century mark.

The Frenchman’s latest goal also adds to his list of big stage strikes in Europe, Mbappé having now scored in Old Trafford, Anfield, the Etihad, the Westfalenstadion, the Juventus Stadium and the Allianz Arena.

The Champions League’s top scorer remains Cristiano Ronaldo, who has plundered 121 goals in 158 games in the competition to date. The only other player in history to have broken the century mark in Europe’s elite club tournament is Leo Messi, who has 106 in 129 appearances.
