Real Madrid: Doukouré injured in Casemiro penalty air kick
Levante say Cheick Doukouré suffered an ACL injury when he "kicked the air" in the incident that led to Madrid's controversial second penalty.
Levante have announced that Cheick Doukouré suffered a major knee injury when he "kicked the air" in the process of giving away Real Madrid's controversial second penalty on Sunday evening.
Doukouré penalised for Casemiro challenge despite no contact
Despite Doukouré appearing not to make any contact with Madrid's Casemiro, a VAR review upheld referee Ignacio Iglesias Villanueva's decision to award a 78th-minute spot-kick for the Ivorian's challenge on the midfielder.
Gareth Bale subsequently converted from 12 yards to earn Madrid a 2-1 LaLiga win over the Granotas, who had cancelled out Karim Benzema's first-half penalty for the visitors with a Roger Martí goal on the hour mark.
"Doukouré kicked the air in his attempts to clear the ball"
In a seemingly pointedly-worded confirmation of Doukouré's injury, Levante - whose president, Quico Catalán, had spoken post-match of his bewilderment at the penalty award - said in a statement on their official website:
"The injury occurred in the incident that led to the second penalty given to Real Madrid, which was scored by Bale. Doukouré kicked the air in his attempts to clear the ball, and landed extremely awkwardly on his left leg. The result is that he has suffered an injury to the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee."
Casemiro "would've gone straight to an ambulance" if contact made
Speaking after the match at the Estadi Ciutat de València, Catalán said of Madrid's decisive penalty: "I've seen 37 images and I think it's very harsh... I am surprised by the second penalty because there is no contact. If he [Doukouré] catches him [Casemiro] then he would have gone straight to an ambulance."
