Barça: Piqué chosen as face of Catalan Tourism Board
The Barcelona central defender is the star of a new promotional video for the Catalan regional government's tourism agency.
Barcelona central defender Gerard Piqué is now the face of tourism in Catalonia after the regional government (Generalitat) asked the 32-year-old to front a promotional video aimed at boosting visitors numbers to the area.
Piqué has always worn his Catalan identity proudly on his sleeve and is in favour of independence for the autonmous region and the Catalan Tourism Board (ACT) had no hesitation in seeking the former Spain international’s input for the new video clip, which Piqué put out on social media.
In the promotional clip, the defender is seen extolling the virtues of Catalonia under the hashtag #acceptthechallenge, with the video picking up 200,000 Twitter views and 10,000 Facebook clicks in just half an hour.
Other Catalan celebrities to have previously fronted campaigns for the ACT include Piqué’s former teammate Carles Puyol, chefs Jordi, Josep and Joan Roca and model Vanesa Lorenzo.
