Barcelona's Luis Suárez issued a statement on Sunday to clarify the situation that has brought criticism in recent days about his decision to go under the knife ahead of the final of the Copa del Rey, one that his side lost 1-2 at the hands of Valencia.

Suárez response to critics

The complaints about the choice to have surgery, which ruled him out of the domestic final, insinuated that the striker had put country above club. They said that he had prioritised his potential availability for Uruguay in this summer's Copa América at the expense of the Copa final with Barcelona.

In a letter published on his official Twitter account Suárez clarified that the injury that led him to go for the operation had 'absolutely nothing to do with the cartilage' but instead because of 'a torn meniscus suffered in the tie against Liverpool'.

As well as giving praise to his teammates who 'tried everything' he also made it clear that he had no choice but to get the appropriate treatment saying, 'I was forced to go through the operating room...against my will'.

100% committed to Barça

Suárez ended the letter with a message about his total commitment to the Barcelona cause.

“I have shown every day since I arrived at this club that I am 100% involved, I give it all in every training and in every match for this shield”.
