United States record biggest winning margin in World Cup history

The United States Women's national team started their World Cup road with a resounding defeat over Thailand, with Alex Morgan scoring five goals.

The United States women's national team started its path in the 2019 France World Cup surpassing its own record after beating 13-0 a weak Thailand squad that couldn't stop the US side's power on the field.

United States leaves this match as the clear favorite to lift once again the World Cup trophy, as the American girls displayed their high quality and definition while dismantling the Asian team. But this game meant more for Jill Ellis squad as the US women's national team recorded the widest ever winning margin in the history of the World Cup, both men's and women's, and also in the States history.

Top World Cup wide-margin winning scores

Alex Morgan, the American striker, lead the way in the scoring chart, as the Orlando Pride player ended the game with a total of five goals in the 13-0 win over Thailand in their debut game at the France World Cup.

However, the United States is not the only national team to have scored more than six goals in a Women's World Cup. Germany held the double record until this tournament edition, as in the 2007 WC the Germans beat Argentina 11-0 while in 2015 they defeated the Ivory Coast 10-0,both in the Group Stage.

The other three record holders are Switzerland 10-1 Ecuador in 2015, Norway 8-0 Nigeria in 1995 and Japan 0-8 Sweden in 1991, all in the Group Stage.

This 13-0 score against Thailand surpasses their own World Cup wide-margin record as they beat 5-0 Nigeria in 2003, 7-1 Nigeria in 1991, 5-0 Brazil in 1991 all in Group stage while also beating Chinese Taipei 7-0 at quarterfinals in 1991.
