Real Madrid’s home, the Santiago Bernabéu, officially ended the 2018-19 season on Sunday. Two games had seen the ground in use past the final Madrid home game: the international match between Spain and Sweden, a qualifier for Euro 2020, and the charity Corazón Classic Match, this Sunday past.

The ground will be undergoing construction and renovation works for the next three and a half years, with a license to continue working until 2022, and which will see the ground radically transformed both inside and outside. Today, however, the efforts were rather modest: a few machines and some workers from FCC, the firm in charge of the reform, turned up. Overall the renovation will cost nearly 800 million euros, between the works themselves and the interest Real Madrid will pay on the debt incurred to finance the project.

Bernabéu works plan for summer 2019

The plan for this summer focuses on two main aspects: the demolition of the Esquina del Bernabéu shopping centre, which has been shut for several weeks now, and the removal of the Bernabéu roof. During the next season the new East Stand will start to be built, along with the demolition of the two towers on the west side of the ground and the creation of two new ones, more central, which will support a large part of the weight of the new roof.
