The lawsuit delaying Diomande’s transfer

The finalisation of Yan Diomande’s transfer to Real Madrid has been delayed because of a dispute between two groups representing the player. On one side is Max Gradel, through his company Maxidel Management; on the other is Roc Nation, the multinational founded by rapper Jay-Z. Roc Nation currently handles Diomande’s affairs, but Maxidel has filed a complaint with FIFA alleging breach of contract, arguing that Madrid negotiated with Roc Nation despite Maxidel’s existing agreement with the player.

Maxidel was the agency that arranged the Ivorian winger’s move from CD Leganés to RB Leipzig last year, and the lawsuit is not simply an internal business dispute. It directly affects the transfer between Leipzig and Madrid. Under FIFA regulations, it could have consequences for the player’s registration.

Real Madrid maintains that it was unaware of the situation and is not responsible for it, so the club expects eventually to be cleared of any wrongdoing. In the meantime, however, it must deal with the uncertainty. One possible solution would be for Diomande to receive provisional registration while the dispute over a portion of the transfer package is resolved. Almost every other aspect of the deal is already agreed: the fee to be paid to Leipzig, the payment structure, the documentation and the player’s new contract with Madrid.

The remaining obstacle is FIFA. The governing body applies strict rules governing agents and representation companies and has already opened a review of the complaint. FIFA can delay, and in extreme cases refuse, the processing of an International Transfer Certificate if there is an unresolved dispute over a player’s representation rights. Clubs are especially cautious in such situations because paying a commission to the wrong intermediary can lead to sanctions.

Diomande now finds himself at the centre of a boardroom battle. Maxidel negotiated his move to Leipzig and considers him one of its flagship clients. It is telling that the company has pinned a photograph of Diomande signing for the German club to the top of its Instagram profile, where he appears alongside Jean Martial Lopoh, Maxidel’s lead agent. Maxidel negotiated directly with Leipzig and says it was authorised by the player to act on behalf of the young right winger.

Roc Nation entered the picture more recently. A few months ago, Diomande sought to become one of the emerging faces on its roster. The agency has a significant presence in Brazil through Frederico Pena, who represents Vinicius Junior and Endrick, among others. That is the backdrop to the current conflict.

During his holiday after the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Diomande remained in the United States, visited Roc Nation’s offices in New York and attended a show at Yankee Stadium as a guest of Jay‑Z. The invitation was arranged by Michael Yormark, the company’s international president of sports. Jay‑Z had previously greeted the player warmly pitchside before the Brazil-Ivory Coast match at the World Cup.

It was Roc Nation with whom Real Madrid conducted its negotiations, and the club is now waiting for a swift resolution to the dispute between the two agencies. Diomande must wait as well. He is currently in Leipzig and is already preparing mentally for a return to the Spanish capital.
