Update:
Official: Odegaard joins Real Sociedad on loan

Real Madrid midfielder Martin Odegaard will spend next season on loan at Real Sociedad, it has been confirmed.

Sociedad announced on Friday that it reached an agreement with Madrid that will see the 20-year-old Norwegian join the club on loan for the 2019/20 season.

The player will be officially presented at the Anoeta Stadium on Sunday, together with the Basque club’s other summer signings, Portu (Girona), Alexander Isak (Dortmund), Modibo Sagnan (Lens) and Alex Ramiro (Athletic Bilbao).

“A very talented player with huge potential, his time in the Eredivisie has made him mature and understand what high-level competition is,” stated Sociedad, who also praised “his versatility to play in attacking positions” and hailed him as a “key figure” for the upcoming season.

Odegaard renews with Real Madrid

Ahead of Sociedad's announcement, Odegaard signed an four-year extension of his Real Madrid contract, following an impressive season on loan with Eredivisie club Vitesse last season, during which he played 39 games, providing 11 goals and 12 assists.

Bayer Leverkusen were also in the running to sign the 20-year-old defender. However, following the advice of his agent and after visiting Sociedad’s facilities, the attacking midfielder chose the LaLiga club over a move to Germany.

His assignment at Sociedad will be the young Norwegian’s third loan spell since joining Real Madrid in 2015, after Vitesse and Heerenveen.
