Nigeria vs Benin: how and where to watch: times, TV, online

NOTE: There are global issues with the televised broadcast of the game in Uyo. You can still follow our live feed online where we will bring you news of goals and big chances.

The opening qualifying matches for 2021 Africa Cup of Nations – the 33rd edition of the tournament, get underway this week three-time winners Nigeria playing host to Benin, who have moved up to 82nd in the FIFA ranking. While Nigeria are seasoned AFCON old hands and figure among the favourites to go on and lift the trophy in Cameroon in two years' time, this will be Benin’s fifth appearance. However, The Squirrels (Les Écureuils) coached by Frenchman Michel Dussuyer, go into the match having suffered just two defeats so far this year – to Senegal at 2019 AFCON and more in recently, in a friendly with Algeria, losing by the minimum on both occasions.

So Nigeria will have their work out trying to prise open a solid Benin defence in Uyo. Gernot Rohr’s Super Eagles picked up the bronze medal at this year’s AFCON and similarly, have enjoyed a positive year. Just three defeats in the 13 games played this year – they also succumbed to Senegal and Algeria and lost 2-0 to Madagascar in June but impressed in recent friendlies, holding Ukraine and Brazil to draws.

All of the Nigeria squad are currently plying their trade at European clubs – some of the household names include Samuel Chukwueze, Alex Iwobi, Wilfred Ndidi, Peter Olayinka, Peter Etebo and Emmanuel Dennis. Rohr has drafted in Enyimba defender Ifeanyi Anaemena to replace Bryan Idowu who is unable to travel due to bureaucratic reasons.
