Real Madrid: Over 260m euros' worth out on loan across Europe
The CIES Football Observatory has compiled a ranking of the most valuable players currently on loan at clubs in Europe's five major leagues.
The CIES Football Observatory has ranked the market value of the players on loan at clubs in Europe's top five leagues, calculating the figure by using an algorithm that takes into account a variety of factors. These include age, position, nationality, loan and parent clubs, games played at club and international level, contract duration, the terms of their loan deal, their teams' results...
Coutinho heads CIES loanee chart
The most valuable loanee, says the study, is Bayern Munich's Philippe Coutinho, who joined from Barcelona on a year-long deal in the summer. Having paid an 8.5m-euro loan fee for the Brazilian, whose impact has waned after making a good start to the season, Bayern can purchase him outright for 120m at the end of the campaign. However, such a price is significantly higher than CIES' 96.5m-euro valuation.
Real Madrid men in second and third
Second in the list is Dani Ceballos. After being loaned to Arsenal by Real Madrid, the Spaniard won a place in Unai Emery's midfield straight away, but has since struggled to shine at a club enduring a difficult season. According to CIES, his value is 65.7m, although unlike Bayern, Arsenal have not negotiated an option to buy.
The podium is rounded off by Martin Odegaard, whose estimated value is 57.3m euros. The Norwegian is on loan from Madrid to Real Sociedad, where he is expected to stay for two seasons. So far, Odegaard has been a success at the San Sebastián club, playing regularly and performing well. If Madrid opt to take him back to the Bernabéu next summer, they will have to pay La Real a penalty fee.
Overall, seven Real players make CIES' top 50
Of the top 50 loanees in the CIES list, it is Madrid who have the most representatives. In addition to Ceballos and Odegaard, there are five further Bernabéu players temporarily at other clubs, with Achraf Hakimi considered their next-most valuable loanee. The full-back, who has shone at Borussia Dortmund since moving to Germany on a two-year deal in summer 2018, is ranked in eighth place with a value of 39m euros.
Completing the group of Madrid loanees to be included in the ranking are Borja Mayoral, Óscar Rodríguez, Sergio Reguilón and Takefusa Kubo. Striker Mayoral, who is currently at Levante, is deemed to have a market worth of 22.6m euros, while Rodríguez (Leganés) is given a tag of 21.2m, Reguilón (Sevilla) is priced at 18.9m and Kubo (Mallorca) is valued at 17m.
Between them, the seven are worth 241.7m euros, a combined figure that no other club gets close to. On top of the septet in the top 50, meanwhile, fellow Madrid loanees Jesús Vallejo (Wolves), Andriy Lunin, Jorge de Frutos and Javi Sánchez (all Real Valladolid) have been valued by CIES at 8.5m, 5.5m, 3m and 3m, respectively.
In total, therefore, Madrid have 261.7m euros of talent out on loan in Europe's five major leagues (Real Zaragoza's Alberto Soro and Racing Santander's Luca Zidane have not been valued by CIES as they have been sent out to clubs at a lower level).
